After the roaring success of Athens Olympics four years ago it is China's turn to show the world that it is the perfect host nation for the Olympics 2008. Beijing is the hot seat of the Olympics games. With the slogan “One world, One dream” it calls upon the world to unite in the Olympic spirit and has embarked on the biggest sporting extravaganza. Olympics 2008 is a multi-sport event, scheduled from August 8 to August 24, 2008.

In Olympics 2008 about 10,028 athletes from 204 NOC's (National Olympic Committee) are competing in 302 events in 28 sports (165 men’s events, 127 women’s events, and 10 mixed events). The opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympics was officially opened by President Hu Jintao at China's iconic National Stadium, which saw more than 15,000 performers showcasing the nation's ancient history and its rise as a modern power. Dance performances, drum beats, spectacular fireworks, martial arts performance, percussionist's performances announced the arrival of Olympic events.
2008 Beijing Summer Games event include shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, synchronized swimming, archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cycling, diving, equestrian, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, judo, mountain biking, rowing, sailing, table tennis, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling. Besides these a number of track and field events are also organised in Beijing Olympics.

Olympic Games are segregated into the summer and winter sports. However, since 1992, the summer and winter sports events are subdivided into two years. Interestingly, there's also Special Olympics organised by an international organization appointed to help people with intellectual disabilities. This organistaion develops self-confidence, social skills and a sense of personal accomplishment in the intellectually disabled people apart from providing year round sports training to them.
Over the years, Olympic Games have undergone metamorphic change. All the nations worldwide are encouraged to participate in the games. In this regard, effective improvements in the satellite communications have been of great help.
